Alt-folk singer/songwriter and actor Bay Bryan mesmerises with their exquisite new single Far Away, meandering it’s way to our ears on the 18th of April, 2022. The single is the fourth taken from their upcoming album, The Meadow, due to release in 2023.
Within the first entrancing seconds Far Away lures us in with Bay’s commanding-yet-delicate vocal soaring over a straightforward instrumentation. From then onwards we are along for the ride, flowing in diary-like stream-of-consciousness, with satisfying twists and turns that leave us with a warm sense of resolve. The arrangement is meticulous and supports Bay’s ever-changing song structure beautifully, featuring Fraser Langton (clarinet), Sam Vicary (bass), Pete Mitchell (percussion) and guitar/piano/synths (Bay Bryan). As the fourth single from Bay’s upcoming album, a distinct style becomes apparent in Bay’s songwriting and performative flair: one exuding strong narrative drive, musical elegance, and soulful theatricality.
Far Away is an intimate window into Bay’s thought process and the emotional landscape that comes with it. And in the string of Bay’s recent singles it feels like yet another blend of genres, fusing elements of folk, jazz and musical theatre to form something that is both alternative and accessible.
Talking about the track, Bay reveals “Far Away to me is that dreamy and romantic moment before a momentous shift in your life. Where you’re revelling in the feelings of excitement and anticipation --dreaming up what is to come while looking back nostalgically on what has been. It’s that more fantastical time before sh*t get real…” Fans of the likes of The Magic Lantern, The Rocket Summer and Anaïs Mitchell will feel at home here.

Based in Manchester (originally from the mountains of Colorado USA), Bay has only just begun seriously releasing music as of 2021. And yet their first three singles have received notable attention: with Sweet Joan being played on BBC Radio 3 in October 2022; garnering reviews from both Folk Radio UK and Fortitude Magazine; while previous singles Sticky Shadows and Let Go both made waves in the indie music community with high praise from Indie Music Centre and Rising Artists Blog; Indie Top 39 even named Sticky Shadows as the best song of 2021.

Lyrics
///
I’m a little uncertain
And a little afraid
This thing I had going
It’s slipping away
The good times so golden
Bewitched me to stay
A little bit longer
Than I should’ve done
But hey, anyway
I really will miss this place
It’s mild and mellow taste
It took me quite an age
I will admit to say
But I’m finally going
Out
Beyond where I’ve kept confined
Out beyond this cage of mine
And out to where I’m going
So Far Away
And Oh my,
It really did take me so much time
To lift this veil up from over my eyes
To show me where I’m going
So Far Away
Away
I’m sick of just hoping
To shake the heavy weight
Of sitting here ignoring
This truth now awake
If I don’t leave I won’t leave
And I’ll have left it too late
So go now,
I cast myself away
Go
I really will miss this place
It’s mild and mellow taste
It took me quite an age
I will admit to say
But I’m finally going
Out,
Beyond where I’ve kept confined
Out beyond this cage of mine
And out to where I’m going|
So Far Away
And I will hold
These memories of golden times
The shadow lows and idle highs
And I shall take them where I’m going
So far away
Away
We are longing
For the truth
We are still searching|
But that’s old news
We are dissolving
But we will move on
Because we are evolving
But that’s old news
That’s old news
Oh sweet meadow you got me
Like a puppeteer you pull at my heart strings
Oh sweet meadow you got me
Who do you think you are
Who do we think we are

approved artist bio for immediate release…
Bay Bryan is a singer/songwriter based in Manchester (UK), originally from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado (USA), whose magnetic stage presence and heartfelt storytelling never fails to charm and command a room. Their narrative-led modern-meets-classic style of writing reminds of artists like Laura Marling, Rufus Wainwright and Donovan. Bay’s alternative/indie-folk debut concept album called The Meadow is coming out in 2023.
The first single from the project, “Sticky Shadows,” a rhythmically charged and vibrant track (released July 16th 2021) had an overwhelmingly positive response from the indie music community with several playlist adds, reviews and radio plays. The follow-up single “Let Go” (released September 24th 2021), with it’s folk-jazz nostalgic feel, has garnered over 13k views on the music video alone, over 3k streams on Spotify, and several radio plays.
Bay also recently composed songs for the theatre production “The Not So Ugly Sisters,” co-produced by Wrongsemble, RedLadder and Leeds Playhouse; and scored the music for the short film “Egg Party,” which has been accepted into several film festivals and won the audience choice award at Cinequest Film Festival (2021).
The Meadow, set to be released in 2023, is Bay’s debut studio album. It consists of 11 tracks (7 songs and 4 interludes) and conceptually takes place in a self-created fantasy space designed to keep one safe, idle and in a day-dream of sorts. However, underneath the “golden” rays of comfort lies a feeling of discord —a truth: that we no longer belong in this meadow anymore. The songs & interludes, both directly and indirectly, explore an ongoing push-and-pull —to stay or to leave. By the end of the album we finally take those much needed steps “Beyond The Meadow,” marking an end to a chapter and the beginning of a new adventure, one that is “blue…”
